Bahraini Fish Machboos

Are you ready for a culinary adventure that will take you on a journey to the Middle East? Join me as I share my experience of stumbling upon a small restaurant in Istanbul and discovering a delectable dish, Bahraini fish machboos. This Middle Eastern delicacy is a perfect blend of spices, fragrant rice, and tender fish. So come along with me on this delicious journey, and let’s explore the flavors of the Middle East!

It was a warm evening in Istanbul when my parents and I stumbled upon a small Middle Eastern restaurant. The enticing aroma of spices and grilled meats wafted out onto the street, drawing us in. As we took our seats at a cozy table, we scanned the menu and decided to try the Bahraini fish machboos. We had never tasted this dish before, and we were curious to try something new.

Our order arrived promptly, and we eagerly dug in. They cooked the fish to perfection, making it flaky and tender, while the rice had a fragrant and flavorful aroma. As we savored the dish, one of the customers suddenly began to choke on a piece of food. The atmosphere in the restaurant became tense. The young Middle Eastern guy who had prepared our dish rushed to the customer’s aid. He performed the Heimlich maneuver until he cleared the obstruction.

As the restaurant calmed down, I couldn’t help but wonder about the recipe for the delicious machboos. I approached the owner and begged for the recipe, explaining how much we had enjoyed the dish. At first, the owner was hesitant, but eventually, he agreed to share the recipe with me.

Bahraini fish machboos is a flavorful Middle Eastern dish that includes the following ingredients: Sultan Ebrahim fish (Threadfin Bream), turmeric powder, salt, ghee, onions, garlic, dried lime, Arabian spices, coriander, green chilies, potatoes, basmati rice, saffron, and rose water. The dish needs some aromatic spices and seasonings, along with rice, potatoes, and other ingredients. The saffron and rose water are also part of the ingredients as they give the dish a delicate flavor and fragrance that are characteristic of Middle Eastern cuisine.

Bahraini fish machboos is a versatile dish that you can have with a variety of sides and condiments. In addition to the traditional Bahraini pickles, tomato chutney, and cucumber raita, you can also serve it with fried eggplant or roasted vegetables for a healthy and flavorful side dish.

To complement the flavors and textures of the dish, one can serve Bahraini fish machboos with many side dishes and condiments. Here are some traditional options:

Bahraini Pickles: These are a type of tangy pickles made with mixed vegetables such as cucumbers, carrots, and cauliflower, pickled in a brine of vinegar and spices. They provide a refreshing and crunchy contrast to the rich flavors of the fish and rice.

Tomato Chutney: A sweet and sour chutney made with tomatoes, sugar, vinegar, and spices such as cumin and ginger. It adds a tangy and spicy flavor to the dish and complements the fish well.

Cucumber Raita: This is a cooling yogurt dip made with cucumbers, mint, and spices such as cumin and coriander. It provides a refreshing contrast to the spicy and savory flavors of the machboos.

Fried Eggplant: Sliced eggplant is lightly fried and seasoned with salt and cumin to add a smoky and earthy flavor to the dish.

Roasted Vegetables: You can roast vegetables such as zucchini, carrots, and bell peppers with some olive oil, salt, and pepper. The roasted vegetables add a sweet and savory flavor to the dish and provide a healthy side option.

These are just a few examples of the side dishes and condiments that can be served with Bahraini fish machboos. You can also experiment with other options based on your personal preferences and taste.

How to make the Bahraini fish machboos?

  1. Bahraini fish machboos is a classic Middle Eastern dish that is known for its delicious blend of flavors and textures. To make this dish, you will need to start by marinating the fish with turmeric powder and salt. This step is important as it will help to infuse the fish with a rich, earthy flavor that complements the other ingredients in the dish.
  2. Once you have marinated the fish, you will need to heat up 2 tablespoons of ghee in a large frying pan over medium heat. The ghee will add a rich, buttery flavor to the dish and help to keep the fish from sticking to the pan. Once the ghee is heated up, add the fish to the pan and fry it until it turns golden brown on both sides. This will give the fish a crispy, crunchy texture that contrasts nicely with the soft, tender vegetables.
  3. After frying the fish, remove it from the pan and set it aside. In the same pan, add 5 tablespoons of chopped onions, 6 tablespoons of chopped garlic, 10 grams of dried lime, 5 grams of Arabian spices, 15 grams of coriander, and 2 chopped green chilies. Sauté the ingredients until the onions become translucent and the spices become fragrant. This step is essential as it will help to bring out the flavors of the vegetables and spices, creating a savory base for the dish.
  4. Once the onions and spices are sautéed, add the chopped potatoes and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Stir well to combine the ingredients and cook for a few minutes until the potatoes are slightly tender. Then pour enough water into the pan to cover the fish and vegetables. Cover the pan and allow the mixture to simmer until the potatoes are cooked through. This step will help to infuse the vegetables with the flavors of the fish and spices, creating a rich, hearty dish.
  5. Once the potatoes are cooked, add 100 grams of basmati rice to the pan and enough water to cook the rice. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pan and allow the rice to cook until it’s tender and fluffy. This step will help to absorb the flavors of the dish and give the rice a delicious, nutty flavor.
  6. Once the rice is cooked, add 2 grams of saffron and 10 milliliters of rose water to the pan. Mix everything together gently to evenly distribute the ingredients. Cover the pan and allow the dish to cook through on low heat. This step is essential as it will help to infuse the dish with the flavors of saffron and rose water, creating a deliciously fragrant and aromatic dish.
  7. Finally, serve the Bahraini fish machboos hot with regag bread or your choice of sides. This dish goes well with a variety of different sides, such as a fresh green salad, hummus, or baba ganoush. Whatever sides you choose, be sure to enjoy this delicious and hearty Middle Eastern dish!
